INSTITUTUL NATIONAL DE CERCETARE-DEZVOLTARE IN DOMENIUL PATOLOGIEI SI STIINTELOR BIOMEDICALE "VICTOR BABES"
“Victor Babes” National Institute of Research and Development in Pathology and Biomedical Sciences (Institutul Național de Cercetare-Dezvoltare în domeniul Patologiei și Științelor Biomedicale “Victor Babeș” - INCDVB) is the oldest institute of medical research in Romania, having been founded on the 28th of April 1887 by that who gave it its name.
Initially constituted as a “Bacteriology and Pathology Institute”, it was able to comply with one of the most demanding medical needs of the time and it has contributed to finding realistic solutions regarding medical organization. In terms of importance and activity, the institute represented a prefiguration of the future Ministry of Health.
With time, the institute promoted medical sciences in complex areas, such as pathological anatomy, bacteriology, epidemiology, virology, immunology, hygiene, compared pathology and even medical history and ethics, thus making a reputation for itself beyond national borders. One of its main contributions has always been training teachers and specialists, who then gained positions such as founders of different disciplines or head of medical schools. They have helped increase INCDVB’s prestige, which has become a reference standard for both fundamental and applied medical research in the course of time.
Nowadays, the research activity of INCDVB is organized on various levels, covering a large range in pathology and biomedicine: histopathology, immunology, proteomics, genetics, and cellular biology. These activities are being achieved by 9 specialized laboratories: histopathology, biochemistry – proteomics, cellular and molecular biology, medical genetics, immunology, microbiology, neurosciences and myology, imaging and ultrastructural pathology, and radiobiology. In addition, there is a technological transfer compartment, a biostatistics compartment, and a modern unit for laboratory animals breeding (biobase).
Likewise, in order to complement the research activity, the teams of specialists in the institute carry out a diagnosis activity, by the experts in the Institute, who perform special tests for medical units throughout the country within the Diagnosis Center of INCDVB.

INCDVB is currently led by general director Professor Dr. Mihail Eugen Hinescu, head of Histology, Cellular and Molecular Biology Division, at “Carol Davila” University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Bucharest.

Representative components of the activity:
-        Research projects implementations within the health area: over 120 projects implemented during the last 5 years in different institutional research and development programs
-        High-throughput technologies in genomics, proteomics, immunology, imaging (used in medical research and diagnosis of major diseases), laboratory medical service
-        Quality standards compliance: the institute was granted the ISO 9001 certification in 2005 for quality management systems.
-        Training activities for medical staff: research within Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD degree programs; specialty courses; development of complex tools and networks for national and international cooperation with universities, clinics, laboratories and research centers in the field; structural POSDRU projects for specialists and PhD students
-        Organizing annual scientific manifestations within the biomedical field: INCDVB annual symposium, immunology and pathology congresses, workshops featuring specialists in different areas.

Results in the past 5 years:
-        Over 300 articles, books, monographs, book chapters or other scientific papers
-        Over 1000 conferences and presentations in scientific meetings
-        10 patents.

Main areas of scientific interest (theory and applications):
-        Neoplastic transformation and molecular markers in tumorigenesis
-        Study of stem cells and telocytes
-        Molecular methods for the detection of TB and HPV infection
-        Autoimmune disease and tumor immunogenomics
