Nuclear physics experiments
SERVICE DESCRIPTION:
The 9 MV Tandem Accelerator and the surrounding detection, signal processing and data acquisition systems allows research groups to perform a wide range of nuclear physics experiments in the fields of nuclear structure or nuclear reaction physics. The most important setup is the ROSPHERE array which consist of 25 detectors (HPGe detectors only or mixed array with LaBr3:Ce fast timing detectors). This setup, along with the plunger device allow researchers to perform nuclear structure experiments with available accelerated ions and available energies at this accelerator. The laboratory has also the capability to develop gamma-ray detectors based on novel scintillation materials

IBA - Ion Beam Analysis
SERVICE DESCRIPTION:
The IBA techniques are a complete set of experiments for identification of elements in various samples, using various techniques. This techniques are PIXE (Particle Induced X-ray Emission), PIGE (Particle Induced Gamma ray Emission), RBS (Rutherford Back-Scattering), ERDA (Elastic Recoil Detection Analysis) and other elemental analysis techniques using the accelerated beam or the micro-beam provided by the accelerator. In addition, ion channeling (RBS-C) technique can be used to quantify irradiation induced damaged in single crystals. These techniques are complementary analysis techniques, allowing the complete spectroscopy of a sample in one experiment. Using these techniques and the very good energy resolution of the machine, one can perform also depth profiling of an element in the sample, along with the simple elemental identification using the above mentioned techniques. Ion implantation/irradiation
SERVICE DESCRIPTION:
The 3 MV machine is fully equipped with ion implantation capabilities. The range of energies spans from 400 keV up to MeV, depending on the implanted ion specie. The accelerator is also capable in accelerating a very wide range of ions and the small energy resolution allows precisely implant the ions at a desired depth. More details about ion species may be consulted here: https://dfna.nipne.ro/en/3MV_Tandetron_EN.php

9 MV Pelletron Tandem Accelerator
CATALOG NAME:
DESCRIPTION:
The 9 MV Pelletron Tandem Accelerator was installed in IFIN-HH in 1973. The accelerator was completely upgraded starting with 2006. The accelerator has 7 balm lines, each one with its own experiment. The main activity at the accelerator is the basic research in the field of nuclear structure and nuclear reaction physics. The machine is capable in producing a very wide range of accelerated ions (from Hydrogen to Gold, except noble gasses) and a wide range of energies from hundreds of keV to tens of MeV, depending on ion specie and charge state of the accelerated ion. The most complex experimental setup at the 9 MV Tandem Accelerator is the ROSPHERE detection array. The setup consists of up to 25 HPGe detectors, and it can be used in a mixed configuration with LaBr3:Ce fast scintillating detectors for fast timing experiments. The setup is completed with the plunger device for the measurement of lifetimes of nuclear excited states in the range of ps. Other important setups for nuclear physics experiments are the moving tape collector for beta decay experiments, and the particle detection system for reaction mechanisms studies, mainly used for nuclear astrophysics experiments.

3 MV Tandetron Accelerator
CATALOG NAME:
DESCRIPTION:
The 3 MV Tandetron accelerator was installed in IFIN-HH in 2012. The machine was built with three experimental beam lines, each of those with its dedicated experimental setup. The accelerator is capable to produce and accelerate a wide variety of ions, from Hydrogen to Gold, except noble gases. The first beam line is the IBA (Ion Beam Analysis) end station. This experimental setup is fully equipped for PIXE (Particle Induced X-ray Emission), PIGE (Particle Induced Gamma ray Emission), RBS (Rutherford Backscattering), ERDA (Elastic Recoil Detection Analysis) and micro-beam experiments. The reaction chamber has a movable target holder remotely controlled, it also has the possibility to adapt a thin target holder, all remotely controlled from the control room of the accelerator. This chamber has also the possibility of outside beam extraction, in order to perform elemental analysis experiments in air. The second beam line is fully equipped for implantation experiments. The chamber has a multiple target holder with the possibility to cool and heat the target materials. It has also the possibility to carefully control the implantation doses. The third end station is a multipurpose one, suited with multiple ports for mounting the detectors and other experimental devices to be tested.

1 MV Tandetron Accelerator
CATALOG NAME:
DESCRIPTION:
The 1 MV Tandetron accelerator was installed in IFIN-HH in 2012. The accelerator is the most specialised accelerator in the laboratory and it is dedicated for AMS (Accelerator Mass Spectrometry) experiments. The machine was commissioned to measure isotopic ratios for Be, C, Al, I and Pu. The machine has two state of the art chemistry laboratories for sample preparation, one of these being dedicated to the sample preparation for radiocarbon dating. The most important equipment of this laboratory is the AGE3 system coupled with the CHS system. These two devices allow us to prepare samples from organic or carbonate material to graphite suitable for the measurement in the ion source of the accelerator, with a complete automated procedure, free from outside contamination. The measurement sensitivity of the machine allows us to measure one C-14 ion to other millions of billions of other isotopes. This allows the measurement of 60000 years old samples using radiocarbon method. The other isotopic ratio measurements can be applied in the fields of dating the geological layers, in nuclear forensics studies, environmental studies (mainly linked to nuclear activities), and other types of experiments where high sensitivity isotopic ratio determination is needed.
