Research Services
Food authenticity by complementary spectroscopy ( UV-Vis and Infrared-Raman)
SERVICE DESCRIPTION:
Using the most advanced equipments able to identify biomarkers of food components, we can control and certify the authenticity of food, adulterating ingredients or additives. Specific biomarkers are monitored and quantified by validated methods, such as carbohydrates from juices, fatty acids and the lipids from oils, phenolics. Adulteration is evaluated, depending on the food matrix, by the identification of possible not-permitted additives or ingredients according to EU legislation.

Antimutagenic activity of plant extracts
SERVICE DESCRIPTION:
Salmonella typhimurium strains TA98 and TA100. Antimutagenic properties elicited by plant species have a full range of prospective applications in human health. Herbal remedies and phytotherapy drugs, containing active principles are currently developed to protect against electrophile (e.g free radical) attack on DNA and its widespread outcomes such as ageing and cancer. The occurrence rate of cancer is increasing worldwide and the determination of chemopreventive or chemoprophylaxis compound is important in the effort to reduce the risk of cancer. A plant extract indicating antimutagenicity is not necessarily an anticarcinogen; however, it is an indication of possible candidates for such purposes

Bioconversion of agrifood waste on valuable organic chemicals
SERVICE DESCRIPTION:
By using controlled fermentation and targeted strains we can design liquid state fermentation and solid state fermentation on wastes, aiming to obtain valuable organic chemicals. Moreover, we are able to convert by solid-state fermentation of some low cost agro-industrial residues into microbial lipids (“single-cell oil – SCO”), enriched with essential polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) (such as γ-linolenic acid). Using the suitable fungi we can also improve the phenolic yield in solid state fermented substrates.

Multi-Mode Microplate Reader BIOTEK SYNERGY HT
CATALOG NAME:
Multi-Mode Microplate Reader SYNERGY HT
DESCRIPTION:
The Synergy HT Multi-detection reader is a robotic-compatible microplate reader that can measure absorbance, fluorescence, and luminescence. Synergy HT utilizes two independent sets of optics to provide uncompromised performance. For absorbance easurements, there is a xenon-flash lamp with a monochromator for wavelength selection and photodiode detection. This allows the selection of any wavelength for endpoint or kinetic measures from 200 nm to 999 nm in 1 nm increments, as well as spectral scans. Traditional visible wavelength fluorescence measurements are made using a tungsten-halogen lamp with interference filters (excitation and emission) for wavelength selection and photomultiplier (PMT) detection. Glow luminescence measurements are also easily accomplished in Synergy HT. If time-resolved or UV excitation fluorescence measurements are required, Synergy HT automatically integrates the xenon-flash-monochromator excitation with the interference emission filter and PMT detection. Typical applications include antibody-antigen binding, receptor-liquid binding, ELISA, nucleic acid quantitation using fluorescent dyes or direct UV analysis. Synergy HT is capable of reading any plate format up to 384-well plates and provides temperature control up to 50° C and shaking as standard features.

Raman spectrometer
CATALOG NAME:
SENTERRA Raman Microscope
DESCRIPTION:
Raman spectroscopy produces chemical and structural information. When light is scattered from a molecule most photons are elastically scattered. The scattered photons have the same energy (frequency) and, therefore, wavelength, as the incident photons. However, a small fraction of light (approximately 1 in 10-7photons) is scattered at optical frequencies different from, and usually lower than, the frequency of the incident photons. The process leading to this inelastic scatter is the termed the Raman effect. Raman scattering can occur with a change in vibrational, rotational or electronic energy of a molecule. Raman applications: - life sciences (cells, micro-organisms, tissue) - materials science - chemical sciences (pharmaceuticals, chemicals, polymers) - analytical sciences - earth sciences

SPE Vacuum Manifold
CATALOG NAME:
Visiprep™ SPE Vacuum Manifold
DESCRIPTION:
SPE is a form of chromatography, and, as with other chromatographic techniques, control of flow rate is critical for maintaining reproducible extractions. Unlike other vacuum manifolds, the Visiprep system contains a patented valve system that allows for precise flow control through each SPE tube via rotating, independent, screw-type valves situated in each port within the manifold cover. Visiprep vacuum manifolds allow you to process up to 12 (12-port version) or 24 (24-port version) SPE samples simultaneously. Spacing between ports are slightly smaller on the 24-port versions than the 12-port versions so consideration of tube sizes is recommended. Visiprep™ SPE Vacuum Manifold was used to perform solid phase extraction, to separate polyphenols from grapes, in order to determine the polyphenol content using LC-MS analysis. It was also used for concentration and purification of solvent extracts from surface water and sewage water sediments. Furthermore it was used to extract and determine, estrone in water using solid-phase extraction-enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (SPE-ELISA).
