Production, purification and structural and functional characterization of bioactive peptides from food and food waste.
SERVICE DESCRIPTION:
Production, purification, structural and functional characterization of bioactive peptides. Bioactive peptides are important molecules present in food that enhance the functionality characteristics of nutrition. Our overall research focus lies in the understanding of how structural features of bioactive peptides guide their function and how we can manipulate these to alter selectivity for various targets or increase their stability, with the ultimate aim being the development of novel peptide based food and personalized nutrition. Peptides being studied in our group originate from a wide range of sources, including bacteria, plants, animals and humans. They also have a broad range of biological activities, including anti-inflmmatory, antimicrobial, anti-carcinogenetic, and hormonal signaling. The main techniques used in our laboratory are peptide synthesis, chromatography, mass spectrometry and NMR spectroscopy, for production, purification and structural characterization of peptides.

GS-800™ Calibrated Densitometer
CATALOG NAME:
GS-800 CALIBRATED DENSITOMETER
DESCRIPTION:
The GS-800™ calibrated densitometer offers superior accuracy, sensitivity, and data reproducibility. It automatically self-calibrates the optical density to optimize detection. Features include: Transmissive and reflective imaging using red, green, and blue CCD technology to scan chromogenic samples at the optimal detection wavelength Imaging of a wide variety of samples such as 1-D and 2-D gels, colorimetric dot and slot blots, film-based chemiluminescent blots, autoradiograms, slides, and photographs IQ/OQ for verification of the reflectance and transmittance calibration functions High resolution and analysis of closest bands on a gel due to 12-bit precision and 36.3 μm resolution Scanning of larger gels for enhanced separation of proteins on oversized 29 x 40 cm sample platen Accurate quantitation of samples, such as Coomassie Blue– and silver-stained gels, over a large dynamic range (0–3.0 OD) Sealed imaging platen to accommodate wet samples of variable thickness Purity analysis and lane background tools for manufacturing QC Transmittance and Reflectance Unlike laser densitometer systems, the GS-800 calibrated densitometer has both transmittance and true reflectance capabilities that allow accurate scans of both transparent and opaque samples. The advantage of true reflectance scanning is accurate detection and analysis of molecules on the surface of membranes, rather than molecules distributed throughout the membrane matrix. True reflectance provides the most accurate detection and analysis of dot blots, slot blots, and other electrophoretic blots without quantitation error. IQ/OQ The calibration of the GS-800 calibrated densitometer can be validated by following GS-800 IQ/OQ protocols. These protocols are available as an accessory to the GS-800 densitometer. The easy-to-follow protocols include instructions for installation of the hardware and software and for verification of the calibration functions. CFR Module The GS-800 densitometer c

Mini-Protean 3 Cell
CATALOG NAME:
MINI-PROTEAN 3
DESCRIPTION:
Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis is an essential component of any research laboratory performing biochemical tests. For this purpose, there are plenty of units available in the market. Quality, convenience, durability and cost are the factors which drive the decision-making process for most researchers. In my view, the Mini-PROTEAN® 3 Electrophoresis System satisfies all of these needs. The Mini-PROTEAN® 3 consists of a casting stand, casting frame, gasket and a glass plate sandwich which is instrumental in polymerizing the polyacrylamide gel. This casting module eliminates the need for sealing with agar before pouring the gel. The glass plates come with fixed spacers which help to eliminate leaking. The clamping frame and electrode assembly are used to place the glass plates with polymerized gel for running. Combs of various types (comb for preparative gel, 6 and10 well combs, etc.) are available as accessories. The buffer tank looks attractive and performs the dual functions of running gels and transferring proteins onto membrane. The tank consists of a robust lid which can be connected to any of the Bio-Rad power supplies, namely the PowerPac™ Universal, PowerPac™ HC, PowerPac™ 200. The gel remover provided with the apparatus is ideal for removing the gels from the glass plates; we just have to cut the gel with the sharp front and then it can be placed in any required solution. The literature provided with the assembly provides instructions beginning with preparation of SDS-polyacrylamide gels. The Mini-PROTEAN® 3 Electrophoresis System requires 120 ml of upper and 180 ml of lower tank buffer. It requires only 5 ml of acrylamide solution (containing Acrylamide, Bisacrylamide, Tris HCl pH 8.8, Buffer, Milli Q water, SDS, TEMED and APS), which we greatly appreciate as our older assembly from another company requires double the amount for the same size of gel (8 X 7.3 cm) It is very easy to polymerize and run 2 gels simultaneously. And the resoluti

Microarray scanner (Axon)
CATALOG NAME:
GenePix 4200A Microarray Scanner - MOLECULAR DEVICES
DESCRIPTION:
APPLICATION: Genomics: Directed at the genome sequence itself, microarrays have been used to identify novel genes, binding sites of transcription factors, changes in DNA copy number, and variations from a baseline sequence, such as in emerging strains of pathogens or complex mutations in disease-causing human genes. SNP genotyping arrays Arrayed comparative genomic hybridization (aCGH) arrays Transcriptomics: The use of high-density microarrays has impacted the measurement of transcript levels to study complex diseases. With the latest development of microarray technology, it is now possible to quantify transcript levels globally and to integrate such data with information relating to disease. Microarrays based transcriptomics enables mapping a critical genomic region for a disease using affected and unaffected individuals and then pinpointing the responsible gene by identifying differentially expressed genes in the critical region. Gene expression arrays RNA interference (RNAi) arrays MicroRNA (miRNA) arrays Proteomics: Although the analysis of the full proteome has not yet been achieved, rapid progress is being made with microarrays in the field of proteomics. Proteomes exhibit large and dynamic complexity; the number for distinct proteins in mammals will certainly exceed the number of genes, requiring the right technology to be in place for the analysis. The flexibility of the GenePix Microarray System, and especially the high-throughput capabilities of the GenePix SL50 Automated Slide Loader, provides adequate tools to researchers. Protein arrays Peptide arrays Antibody arrays ELISA arrays Reverse Phase Arrays Epigenomics: The gene carries the basic unit of information, but this information has an impact only once it is properly programmed by the epigenome. The DNA methylation pattern is cell type specific and correlates with chromatin structure. DNA microarrays are being utilized to identify methylation patterns, and the GenePix automation so
