The Shimadzu single quadrupole GCMS-QP2010 gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer offers reliable, cost-effective productivity for the most challenging laboratory analyses. It has the versatile functionality and robust, simple operation necessary for high-throughput production laboratories performing routine analyses. The GCMS-QP2010 is equipped with a CombiPAL AOC-5000 autosampler, being able to perform headspace and "in-tube-extraction" (ITEX) analysis. ‘In-tube extraction’ (ITEX) is a relatively new technique (commercially available since 2006, by CTC Analytics AG, Zwingen, Switzerland) similar to purge-and-trap systems. The ITEX technique has been applied successfully for the extraction of volatile compounds from different matrices. The metabolites extracted from the headspace above the plant material using the ITEX technique are further separated by gas chromatography (GC) and fragmented to charged molecular fragments (ions) that are detected by mass spectrometry (MS). The unique fingerprint obtained by MS analysis is then used for metabolite recognition and identification. Thus, the ITEX technique efficiently combines the extraction, with selective concentration of analytes and rapid transfer of target compounds, to the GC–MS system.
