Sensors based on thin films and microfibres technologies
SERVICE DESCRIPTION:
Thin film technologies, combined with electrospinning may lead to very interesting and performant sensitive elements carried out by compounding the polymer microfibres with thin coating of different substances on their surfaces in order to increase their sensitivity and accuracy by increasing the contact surface with the measured quantity. This way, one may achieve sensors devoted to gas and liquid sensing, as well as for accurate gauging of many other quantities like deformation, force, acceleration, vibration, humidity, etc. These two kinds of microtechnologies may be also combined with the outstanding properties of magnetic amorphous micro and nanowires, leading to development of new types of sensors with improved performances. Digital signal processing in instrumentation
SERVICE DESCRIPTION:
Researchers from this group have expertise and hands on experience related to design, prototyping and testing of hardware and software concepts used in digital signal and image processing systems, namely design of instrumentation for measurement of electrical and non-electrical quantities with application in engineering, industry and biomedicine. Our expertise extends to providing services in the following topics: digital signal acquisitions systems for applications requiring small amplitudes and high frequency signal processing capabilities; design and implementation of application specific signal processing algorithms; implementation of DSP algorithms on hardware (FPGA) development of complete signal acquisition and processing chains for instrumentation with critical time demanding requirements; prototyping of mixed analog and digital signal conditioning circuits used to acquire the response from a broad range of sensors, like: gas sensors, MAW strain gauges, inclinometers, deformation, orientation and positioning sensors; integration of digital signal processing techniques in high speed real-time embedded processing systems. The biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) of waste water, industrial effluents and surface water is an expression for the amount of oxygen consumed by the decomposition of organic matter in a biochemical process. The BOD system, consisting of the sample bottle and the BOD sensor, represents a closed system. In the bottle, above the sample itself, is a defined volume of air. During the BOD measurement, the bacteria in the sample consume the dissolved oxygen in the sample. This is replaced by oxygen in the bottle above the sample. The carbon dioxide released at the same time react with the potassium hydroxide in the seal gasket. This generates a decrease in pressure within the system. This is measured by the BOD sensor and displayed as a BOD value in mg/l O2.
